Moderna contributes to the development of RNA-based vaccines | health | Essential information for better health | DW

The American company Moderna Pharmaceuticals allowed the use of its vaccine against the Corona virus, in the efforts of the World Health Organization to develop vaccines based on RNA, and this would enhance production and access to poor countries.

And the Bloomberg news agency quoted Petro Treblanch, managing director of “Afrigin” for Biological Sciences and Vaccines in South Africa, as saying that the company, which works with the World Health Organization, used the Moderna vaccine in comparative studies on mice to test the effectiveness of its vaccines.

The demand for corona vaccines has slowed around the world, as newer mutations have caused less severe symptoms, yet many people in low- and middle-income countries such as South Africa have not yet received the vaccine, and thus are at greater risk of contracting corona.

With Moderna’s help, Virgin is developing a vaccine that will be manufactured in at least 15 production facilities around the world under the auspices of the World Health Organization’s Transfer Center for RNA Technology in Cape Town.

Developed by the American company Moderna in cooperation with the US National Institutes of Health for Infectious Diseases. Its effectiveness has reached 95 percent. It adopts almost the same technology (mRNA), but its storage conditions are less stringent and it needs minus 20 degrees. Despite this, the quantities of its distribution in the world remained less than the first vaccine, which may be explained by its price of $ 33 per dose, unlike the second vaccine of $ 20.

It was first introduced by the UAE before being licensed by China, and then it was imported by several countries, including Morocco, Jordan and Egypt. Its effectiveness rate, according to its manufacturers, reached 79 percent, but the scientific data is not published properly.
