Children of the age group 12 years and above were trained to design a smart irrigation system, using microprocessors, a water pump and a humidity sensor, during an interactive workshop hosted by the Robots Corner as part of the activities of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival 2023, organized by the Sharjah Book Authority at the Sharjah Expo Center.
The workshop witnessed a great interaction from the participating children, who showed great interest in learning about the electric irrigation system, all the equipment and tools used in it, and its precise working mechanism. Meanwhile, the activities of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival continue in its 14th edition, which will run until May 14.
The children were introduced to the simple electrical circuit system and the mechanism of electricity flow through this system, then they moved on to exploring the Arduino platform, which consists of an open-source and programmable electrical board, as well as the mechanism of using the breadboard, which is one of the most basic components for learning how to Building electrical circuits, as well as the “electrical relay”, which is an electric switch that allows the control circuits to regulate each other’s control to protect the electrical system due to excessive currents, in addition to the water pump and sensors that measure humidity levels, to come out at the end of the workshop with the design of an integrated smart irrigation system.
The supervisor of the workshop pointed out that the aim of it is to put students and adolescents in the form of a mechanism for the work of smart irrigation systems that operate with sensors. The smart irrigation system works automatically, and the pump starts pumping water to irrigate the plants, and when the soil’s need for water is reached, the system stops automatically.
