He added that the new proposal “will do justice, and will recognize 400 SLA fighters who were not in the command ranks, as eligible for a housing grant. This is my commitment and I thank Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman for his commitment and mobilization to lead the move. “

The South Lebanese Army (SLA) operated in southern Lebanon from the late 1970s until Israel left Lebanon in May 2000. It was established as an IDF branch in southern Lebanon, with the aim of safeguarding Israel’s interests in the region. The SLA numbered about 2,500 fighters, and acted as a military body for everything. However, according to various testimonies, it suffered from a split in the loyalty of its fighters and ethnic tensions between them.

In the period before leaving Lebanon, most of the SLA fighters (about 70%) were Shiite Muslims, while most of the commanders were Christians, who fought in the service and mission of the State of Israel. SLA fighters fled to Israel, and their families live in Israel to this day. Others emigrated to Europe, and some returned to live in their homes in southern Lebanon, apparently after paying ransom to Hezbollah.
