NEW YORK, 19 September / WAM / Today, during Climate Week in New York, he announced the establishment of the “UAE Independent Climate Accelerators Project” – an independent and impartial entity for climate action that will bring together members from the public and private sectors, including academic institutions and NGOs. To advance the UAE’s commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
In preparation for the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), to be hosted by the UAE in 2023 at Expo City Dubai, the Action Accelerators Project, led by Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, will be the first independent body of its kind worldwide.
Under the guidance of Sheikha Shamma, and with the support of industry experts and leaders, the project will act as a think tank focused primarily on providing advice and recommendations to stakeholders on effective positive action to address climate change, which facilitates the transition to a green economy.
Guidance set forth by the United Nations Environment Program defines a “green economy” as “a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy that is open to all segments of society” that puts social justice, well-being and minimizing environmental risks at the center of decision-making.
This transformation will contribute to boosting GDP growth, increasing job opportunities, and strengthening the UAE’s position as a global center in the areas of environment, social and governance and as a pioneer in climate action.
Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, CEO of the UAE Independent Climate Accelerators Project, said: “I am honored to be entrusted by the UAE leadership with the task of creating and leading the UAE Independent Accelerators Project for Climate Change. It is quite clear, and we have made great progress towards implementing our strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. However, this goal is only a first stage of our work. What we are doing today is mobilization and unification of efforts that will allow us to achieve a more sustainable future beyond the year 2050.. The only way for us to do this is to enable and activate an integrated system that actively participates in achieving one common vision. The UAE Independent Accelerators Project for Climate Change constitutes the nucleus that will build this integrated system.
In addition to its role as a catalyst for a green knowledge-based economy and attracting the best global talent in the sustainability sector to the UAE, this project will facilitate international business, innovation, and technology partnerships that work towards the unified goal of tackling climate change.. Key focus sectors will include energy transport. Electricity, sustainable fuels, energy efficiency, green buildings, smart cities, carbon capture and storage, nature-based solutions, and the two growing sectors in climate technology and agricultural technology.
The “UAE Independent Accelerators for Climate Change Project” is an entity aimed at addressing climate change, and brings together the private sector, government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs, and international organizations. The entity will provide impartial advice and proposed actions to the parties concerned with the goal of zero emissions by 2050 in the UAE .. This will include advice and guidance on positive actions to address climate change and reduce the risks associated with climate change to the country before the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention Framework on Climate Change (COP28) to be hosted by the UAE in 2023, during and after.
The UAE Independent Accelerators Project for Climate Change aims to accelerate the transition to a green economy, which will be necessary to achieve the goal of zero emissions and implement the climate plan that the UAE has committed to. This will allow the UAE economy to benefit from the global momentum surrounding measures to address climate change. It helps in setting the country’s policies to achieve the transition to a green economy and strategically influence the GDP and economic growth of the UAE.
