Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s call for the implementation of the two-state solution is “positive,” but he made it clear that the real test for this is the immediate return to the negotiating table.

Abbas told the United Nations General Assembly, “The real test of the seriousness and credibility of this position is for the Israeli government to sit down at the negotiating table immediately, to implement the two-state solution on the basis of the relevant international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, and to stop all unilateral measures that undermine the two-state solution.” ».

Efforts to reach an agreement based on a two-state solution, including the establishment of two Israeli and Palestinian states side by side, have long stalled.

Lapid’s mention of the two-state formula is the first by an Israeli leader at the United Nations in years. US President Joe Biden, during a visit to Israel in August, expressed support for the proposal.

Lapid spoke less than six weeks before the November 1 elections that could restore former right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to power.

Netanyahu has long opposed a two-state solution.

Israel captured East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip – areas the Palestinians seek for their independent state – in the 1967 war. US-sponsored peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians collapsed in 2014.
