While sports fans in Israel continue to follow with concern, Ester Roth Shahmarov unfolds her story, and sheds light on her medical condition. The legendary runner, one of the greatest female athletes ever in Israel, was interviewed by “Olan Shishi” for the first time since she was hospitalized about two weeks ago due to a kidney complication.
“There were rumors that I was dying, and my condition was really not good. To be honest, I took myself and was hospitalized at the last minute. I’m not afraid for myself, but for my family, to whom I have a responsibility,” she says.
According to her, before the hospitalization “I didn’t feel my best. My son told me that if I didn’t go to the hospital immediately, he would call an ambulance for me. He left me no choice. It was very smart of him. I went through tests all night, and then I was hospitalized. There were all kinds of rumors , I realized that people called and spread a rumor that I was dying. The situation really wasn’t alarming, but I was already in the hands of the doctors.”
Ruth Shakhamorov’s body rejected the kidney that was transplanted into her body 14 years ago, and she has been facing difficulties ever since. “When I got to the point where I needed a transplant, there were no solutions in Israel. They told me, ‘Go look.’ , but you have to go through committees. And when I found a donor, the committee did not approve him.”
