Amir Abdollahian also stressed the strict and full implementation of the provisions stipulated in the 1972 treaty regarding the Hermand waters, including the possibility of a joint technical committee between the two countries to review the water situation on the Afghan side, describing this as very important for Iran.

Referring to the enemies’ efforts to destroy relations between the two countries, the head of the Iranian diplomatic corps described some border tensions as a negative factor and stressed Afghanistan’s responsibility to prevent their recurrence, adding: Commitment to the security of the common borders is a red line.

In turn, the acting Afghan Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, drew attention to his country’s problems, including drought and technical issues, reaffirming Iran’s right to water in accordance with the Treaty of Harmand and making it clear that the Afghan side is making efforts to solve the water problem as well as border issues.

He also affirmed Afghanistan’s commitment to border security with its neighbours.

The two sides also exchanged views on the electricity project, railways and border trade.
