Biography of Anba Kyrollos William

Al-Shanina was born in Assiut Governorate, he was born on October 1, 1946, into a priestly family.
It includes: Father Kamil William, former director of the Faculty of Religious Sciences in Sakakini and currently responsible for the House of the Good Samaritan, Father Karmi William from the Salesian Fathers, Father Kamal William from the Franciscan Fathers, and Sister Carmen William from the Sisters of St. Charles Broome (the German Sisters). He is the grandson of the first patriarch of the Coptic Catholic sect, Patriarch Kyrollos Makar.

He joined the Minor Seminary in Tahta, when he was only nine years old, then joined the Seminary in Maadi on September 28, 1955. He wore the seminary dress on June 1, 1961, and his slogan at that time was “Stop my eyes from looking at falsehood.”

He obtained a BA in Theological Studies from the European University in 1969, and a BA in Philosophy and Theology, majoring in Biblical Studies, from the Pontifical Bible Institute in 1981.
Then he obtained his doctorate from the Gregorian University in Rome on May 13, 1983.
+ He was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1974 in his hometown, Al-Shinaina, by the Triangle of Mercy, Bishop John Neuer, adopting the slogan “I will preach your name, my brothers, and praise you in the midst of the church.”
He was appointed as a teacher of the Bible and rituals at the Seminary in Maadi, then he was appointed Vice President from 1983 to 1986, then President of the Seminary from 1986 to 1990, when Bishop John Neuer submitted his resignation due to his health conditions. On March 20, 1990, the Synod met and Father Kamel William was elected Bishop of Assiut. In the name of Cyril William, he was ordained an episcopal and ordained metropolitan of Assiut by the Triangle of Mercy, Cardinal Bishop Stephen II, on June 3, 1990, adopting his episcopal motto, “For their sake, I sanctify myself.”

During the reign of the Triangle of Mercy, Cardinal Bishop Stephen II, the Coptic Catholic Patriarch, appointed him by the Patriarchal Synod to head the ritual committee to review the liturgical books. The committee reviewed and reformulated the text of the Divine Liturgy in 1990, the texts of the Sacrament of Baptism and Chrism in 1994, the texts of the marriage ritual in 1994, and the Book of Hours or Agbeya Prayer in 2002.
