Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his G7 counterparts are seeking to issue a separate statement that includes language opposing “economic coercion,” referring to China, Japanese officials familiar with the planning said.

The officials added – in a statement reported by the Japanese Kyodo News Agency today / Saturday / that the statement, if issued after the conclusion of the G7 summit in Hiroshima on May 21, will highlight the importance of strengthening supply chains for important industrial materials such as semiconductors and criticize the use of economic means to achieve political goals.

The officials, who did not wish to be identified, confirmed that the leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States as well as the European Union will refer to the issue in their main statement but aim to express their views in more detail in a separate document.

Similar themes dominated the G7 ministerial meetings, under Japan’s presidency, in the run-up to the summit, including its three-day meeting of finance chiefs that concluded in Niigata today.

The Group of Seven industrialized countries is an intergovernmental political forum that includes: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The members of the group are considered the largest developed economies in the world according to the International Monetary Fund, and it was established in 1975.
