The World Meteorological Organization said on Wednesday that the average annual global temperature is likely to rise more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the first time in the next five years.
Last year, the organization estimated the chances of this happening at less than 50%, but now it expects temperatures to rise by 66%.
It is noteworthy that the goal of limiting global warming was set at 1.5 degrees during the UN Climate Conference in Paris in 2015.
The organization believes that global warming will permanently rise above this target during the next five years.
“However, the organization is sounding the alarm that we will exceed 1.5°C on a temporary basis with increasing frequency,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.
The organization expected that the temperature in one of the next five years would exceed what was recorded in 2016. To become the hottest year ever due to climate change caused by human activity and the El Niño climate phenomenon.
“This will have wide implications for health, food security, water management and the environment,” Taalas said. “We need to prepare.”
