Amman – At a time when two health consultants revealed that Irritable Bowel Syndrome is caused by psychological problems such as anxiety and depression, they indicated that there is a common health condition that affects the large intestine and causes cramps and bloating in the abdomen, in addition to a change in the pattern of movement of the intestinal cavity, which is one of its causes. Normal bacteria present in the intestine, food sensitivity and genetic factor.
Despite the divergence of expert opinions on a specific name for colon disease, between irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, or the disorder of interaction between the gut and the brain, however, regardless of the different names, this disease has become the most prevalent at the present time.
In the context, Dr. Maysam Akroush, a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist, told Al-Ghad that the name Irritable Bowel Syndrome is scientifically inaccurate and unacceptable as a diagnosis, and that what is meant by irritable bowel syndrome is that there are certain conditions that increase the secretion of nerve impulses from the brain that affect the colon. It causes it to swell, and the colon and viscera do not usually ache except in two cases. The state of blowing and the state of hypoxia on it.
Akroush pointed out that there are many scientific reasons that must be excluded when any of the symptoms accused of the name Irritable Bowel Syndrome occur, such as any change in bowel movement between diarrhea and constipation or any pain or flatulence and gases, and any change in the color of the stool can have reasons. Some of them are simple and have an accidental treatment, some of them are due to a pathological injury and need medical treatment, and some of them can be of recent origin that rings the bell of oncology.
She said that it is important for the symptoms to be classified according to the patient’s age, conditions, work and health, and it is necessary to be aware that the absence of some symptoms rings the bell of tumors, such as anything that affects the patient’s weight and appetite and causes anemia or bleeding.
Akroush added, “With age; That is, over forty-five, the patient needs a colonoscopy for a (precautionary) medical scan to ascertain whether there is any infection, then it is possible to detect it before it later turns into tumors that must be removed.
And she stressed the need to know that there are allergic diseases that occur in the intestines, and other organic ones, such as ulcerative colitis, bacterial infections, and chronic diseases such as tuberculosis.
Akroush continued, “The colon can infect other diseases from other organs in the body, such as diseases of the pulmonary organs.”
She said that there are medications obtained from abroad that can cause colon problems, so we must take care and caution in the event that a family member has any tumors.
She noted that the anti-inflammatory drugs that patients get for pain, arthritis, or others, affect the colon with its microscopic characteristics, prevent absorption and cause diarrhea, considering that some cases of colon have psychological causes such as anxiety and depression.
And she went on to say that it is possible that the injury to the colon reflects either malabsorption or blood smuggling due to the presence of internal diseases in the intestine and colon.
In turn, a consultant digestive system and hepatologist, Dr. Naeem Abu Nabaa, said that the irritable bowel, or what is called irritable bowel syndrome, is a non-organic functional phenomenon characterized by a group of symptoms that indicate a disorder in the digestive system in the absence of any organic disease, and is due to the abnormal activity in the stomach. Bowel muscles.
Abu Nabaa added that the symptoms differ from one patient to another, and may differ in the same patient from time to time, such as abdominal pain, which is the most common symptom, and the pain may be severe in some cases, and may last for hours or days, and usually appears after eating the food that The pressure inside the colon increases.
He continued, “In the case of irritable bowel syndrome, the patient may suffer from constipation or diarrhea, or from a continuous change between the two, and periods of normal bowel movements may separate the episodes.”
He stressed the need to recall that the nocturnal diarrhea that awakens the patient from his sleep is often the result of an organic disease in the intestine, and not as a result of irritable bowel syndrome.
He stressed that there are other accompanying symptoms such as indigestion, which may be represented by nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and the patient may suffer from headache and a slight weight loss.
He pointed out that the feeling of bloating is one of the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, usually in the lower abdomen, and this feeling of bloating may continue to increase during the day and is usually suffered by the majority of patients.
He noted that a person who suffers from symptoms should see a doctor for a clinical examination, after which various laboratory and radiological examinations are performed, and he may need to perform an endoscopy of the digestive system to ensure that he is free of any organic disease, after which he can be diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome after excluding organic diseases.
Abu Nabaa explained that a patient diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome must see a doctor every six months or every year, to ensure that there is no organic disease.
He pointed to the seriousness of anxiety and depression in cases of colon, as one of the causes.
