The Pentagon arrests an American pilot… accused of bombing Al-Omar base

Military law enforcement authorities in the United States have arrested an American pilot, allegedly in connection with an attack on a US military base in northern Syria in April, injuring four US service members.

The pilot was arrested in the United States, on June 16, after reviewing the information contained in the investigation, as his commander decided to place him in pretrial detention, according to a statement provided by US Air Force spokeswoman Anne Stefanik to CNN.

And CNN had revealed that the US military was investigating whether a US service member had fired explosives in an insider attack on the US Omar base in northern Syria, wounding four service members.

The Pentagon refused to reveal any additional details at the present time, and said, “We will not release the name of the individual, and it is too early to issue an indictment against him,” according to the American channel, which added that the charges against the man are expected to be filed within the next few weeks. .

The attack is being investigated by the US Army Criminal Investigation Department and the Air Force Office of Special Investigation. The Army and Air Force Criminal Investigation Department are conducting a joint investigation into the incident.

In a statement earlier this month, the military said a potential suspect, a US service member, has been identified.

Initially, US officials said they believed the attack was caused by indirect fire on the base in a manner similar to rocket and mortar attacks by militias in the area.

A week later, another military statement said that after “further investigation”, the attack was believed to have resulted from the “deliberate placement of IEDs by an unknown person(s) in an ammunition storage area and shower facility.”

Two officials described to CNN the explosives used as “not insignificant” with an explosive force slightly greater than a grenade. The four injured brain injuries were diagnosed and treated after the blasts, and they returned to service later in April.

The Biden administration maintains approximately 900 troops in Syria, including special operations forces, to advise and assist the SDF.
