The United Nations urged Tehran on Wednesday, in a statement, to rescind its decision to amputate the fingers of eight people convicted of theft crimes. The United Nations reminded Iran of its obligations under international human rights law, calling on it to “review its criminal sanctions to eliminate all forms of corporal punishment.”

The United Nations appealed to Iran on Wednesday to reverse the amputation of the fingers of eight men convicted of theft crimes, and called on the Islamic Republic to abolish all forms of corporal punishment.

According to Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, seven of the eight convicts are being held in Tehran’s central prison.

“We are deeply concerned about the apparently imminent amputations of the fingers of eight men convicted of theft in Iran, and urge the authorities to reverse the planned amputations,” Shamdasani’s statement read.

“We also ask Iran to urgently review its criminal sanctions to eliminate all forms of corporal punishment, including amputation, flogging and stoning, in accordance with its obligations under international human rights law.”

According to the United Nations, the eight men were sentenced to have four fingers cut off from their right hands and may be transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran, where a guillotine was recently placed. This guillotine was used on 31 May to amputate the fingers of another man.

Iranian civil organizations indicated that at least 237 people were sentenced to amputation between January 1, 2000 and September 24, 2020. Shamdasani said these sentences were carried out in at least 129 cases.

It should be noted that the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party, prohibits all forms of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

According to the latest report of the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, released on Tuesday, Iran executed more than 100 people between January 1 and March 20, continuing a worrying upward trend.

The report indicated that 260 people were executed in 2020, and at least 310 in 2021, including at least 14 women.

Iran denounced the “biased” report. “It is shocking and shameful to turn major human rights principles into petty political tools,” said Mehdi Ali Ebadi, deputy permanent representative of Iran to the United Nations in Geneva. In Iran, executions are usually carried out by hanging.

Iran, along with China and Saudi Arabia, is one of the countries that carry out the most death sentences in the world.
