The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, announced today, Tuesday, that the visit to Armenia “was scheduled before the outbreak of hostilities.”

“In meetings in Yerevan we conveyed a strong message of support for democracy and security in Armenia, especially after the Azerbaijani attack on Armenia. Our visit was planned before the hostilities that began on September 12,” she said in a statement.

In a press conference held in the Armenian capital Yerevan on Sunday, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives accused Azerbaijan of igniting the border clashes that erupted between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces, which left more than 200 people dead.

Simultaneously, the US State Department said that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan in New York on Monday, in the first direct talks between the two countries since the bloody border clashes this month.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement that Blinken stressed the need to prevent further fighting and return to the peace process, during his meeting with his Armenian counterparts, Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijan, Jehon Peramov, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings, reiterating Washington’s commitment With the help of the two countries in resolving issues peacefully.

“We are happy with the cessation of hostilities and the absence of new clashes in the past few days,” Blinken said, noting that Armenia and Azerbaijan “are interested in normalizing the situation at the borders and in peace.”

The Secretary added, “The dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan cannot be resolved by force. It appears that there is a path to sustainable peace that resolves contradictions through diplomacy. The United States is ready to do everything in its power to support these efforts.”

It is noteworthy that violent clashes erupted last Tuesday between the two countries since the war of the year 2020. The last battles resulted in the death of 215 people before ending on Thursday night with international mediation.
