“Astana 19”: We oppose the autonomy initiatives in northern Syria

A joint statement from Iran, Russia and Turkey within the framework of the “Astana 19” talks on Syria, and the guarantor countries oppose the autonomy initiatives in northeastern Syria.

The final statement of the Astana meeting confirmed today, Wednesday, that “Russia, Turkey and Iran declare the need to implement the agreements on northern Syria.”

The final statement said, “The guarantor countries of the Astana process oppose autonomy initiatives in northeastern Syria.”

Representatives of Moscow, Ankara and Tehran reviewed in detail the situation in the Idlib de-escalation zone and agreed to make further efforts to ensure a sustainable normalization of the situation.

The 19th international meeting on Syria began yesterday, Tuesday, with the participation of delegations of the guarantor countries of the process (Russia, Turkey and Iran) and representatives of the United Nations and the observer states.

And the statement continued: We reject all separatist agendas, and affirm that security and stability in northeastern Syria can only be achieved on the basis of preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The statement condemned “the practices of countries that support terrorist organizations, including separatist groups, and theft of Syrian oil, the revenues of which must return to the Syrian people.”

The statement stressed “condemnation of the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian lands, which are a violation of international law and Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

He also stressed “the rejection of coercive economic measures that contradict international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and the need to lift them and increase humanitarian aid for all Syrians without discrimination, politicization and preconditions,” noting that “the international community and the United Nations must strengthen its assistance to Syria through early recovery projects and facilitate the return of refugees.” and displaced Syrians to their cities and towns.

At the conclusion of the 18th Astana talks last June, the guarantor countries declared the need to implement the agreements on northern Syria.

It is noteworthy that the Astana talks began in 2017 under the auspices of the guarantor countries in order to find a solution to the crisis in Syria.
