The Ministry of Health publishes a report leading causes of death 2000-2020 and mortality rate in 2020-2022.

Without corona deaths, no excess mortality was found in Israel in these years.

The mortality rate until 2019 was on a downward trend, at 29% for males and 28% for females and increased in 2020 due to the corona virus.

In 2021, the death rate among young people aged 15-44 was significantly higher by 7%, apparently following the Miron disaster.

According to the World Health Organization, in 2020 Israel had the lowest death rate for males and the second lowest for females, among eight countries including the US, UK and Germany.

The report ‘Leading causes of death 2000-2020 and mortality rate in 2020-2022’ of the Ministry of Health, presents trends in the mortality rate and the leading causes of death in Israel, as well as a comparison of the causes of death in the first year of the corona virus 2020 to the average of the three years before the corona virus 2017-2019.

The information is based on the registration of the death notices according to the law at the Ministry of the Interior, and the information on the causes of death is based on the digitization in the Central Bureau of Statistics, according to the completion of the death notice by the doctor who determined the causes of death, and update processes from other sources of information.

The publication Leading causes of death 2000-2020 and the mortality rate 2020-2022 indicates trends in the mortality rate and the leading causes of death in Israel by cause of death, age, sex and year until the year 2020. And the rate of total deaths during the Corona period 2020-2022 compared to the average of the years before the Corona 2017-2019.

The publication presents information on age-standardized mortality rates and rates by age group, sex, cause of death, month and year, as well as an average for the years 2018-2020 and a comparison of the causes of death in the first year of the Corona virus 2020, to the average of the three years before the Corona virus 2017-2019 according to the primary cause of death.

Also, the publication presents information on the multiple causes appearing in the notice of death indicating the presence of morbidity in addition to the primary cause, and information on the percentage of deaths in general hospitals according to the primary cause of death. The information is based on the cause of death files prepared by the Central Bureau of Statistics according to the tenth edition of the international diagnostic coding – 10ICD and in accordance with the population estimates of the CBS.

In 2020, the first year of the Corona virus, 48,797 people died in Israel, an increase of 6% from 46,002 in 2019, and 10% from 44,537 in 2018. The number of deaths increased for males by 8% and 11% respectively, and for females by 4% and 8% respectively. Corona was the third cause of death for males and fourth for females.
